FAQs

Do you have any questions?

What are natural dyes and why should we use them?

Natural dyes are colors derived from plants, minerals, and other natural sources such as flowers, roots, leaves, bark, and seeds—without the use of harmful synthetic chemicals.

They have been used for centuries in traditional textiles and are known for being gentle on the skin and environmentally responsible.

 We choose natural dyes because:
 • Safe for delicate baby skin – free from harsh chemicals and toxins
 • Eco-friendly – biodegradable and non-polluting
 • Breathable and skin-friendly – supports comfort, especially for newborns
 • Rooted in tradition – inspired by time-honoured dyeing practices that value harmony with nature
At Baanika, we are also mindful of preserving these traditional techniques—supporting artisans and keeping alive practices that are slowly fading in a modern, chemical-driven world. Every shade is thoughtfully created to be as pure and gentle as your baby’s first touch

Do natural dyes have medicinal value?

Natural dyes have long been associated with wellness traditions, especially in systems like Ayurveda, where plant-based ingredients were valued for their skin-friendly and soothing qualities.
Many natural dye sources such as turmeric, neem, indigo, and madder are known for their antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, or calming properties in their raw form. In natural-dyed fabrics:
 • These plant-derived colors may retain some of their inherent gentle and skin-compatible qualities
 • They are generally non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and less likely to cause irritation, especially when compared to synthetic dyes However, it is important to note
 • Natural-dyed garments are not a medical treatment or therapeutic product
 • The primary benefit lies in being free from harsh chemicals, making them safer for delicate and sensitive skin

Why not synthetic dyes?

Synthetic dyes are widely used in the textile industry because they are cost-effective, uniform in color, and easy to produce at scale. However, for baby clothing, they may not always be the most suitable choice.
Some synthetic dyes can:
 • Contain chemical residues, heavy metals, or azo compounds, depending on the manufacturing process
 • Be more likely to cause skin irritation or sensitivity, especially on delicate newborn skin
 • Contribute to environmental pollution, as they are not easily biodegradable
That said, not all synthetic dyes are unsafe—many are regulated and considered safe for general use.

Are natural dyes same as azo-free dyes?

No, they are different.
 • Natural dyes are derived from plants, minerals, and other natural sources like flowers, roots, leaves, and bark. They are completely free from synthetic chemicals.

 • Azo-free dyes are still synthetic dyes, but they are formulated without certain harmful azo compounds that can break down into toxic amines.
 In other words:
 • Natural dyes = plant-based and minimally processed

 • Azo-free dyes = synthetic, but made safer by removing specific harmful chemicals While azo-free dyes are considered safer than conventional synthetic dyes, they are still chemically produced.

Do natural colours fade very fast?

“Natural colours don’t abruptly fade—they gently evolve over time.”
Natural dyes can fade gradually over time, but they do not necessarily fade “very fast” when properly processed and cared for. Unlike synthetic dyes, which are engineered for high color fastness, natural dyes:
 • Form a gentler bond with fabric fibers
 • May show soft, gradual fading with repeated washing and exposure to sunlight However, the durability of natural colors depends on:
 • The type of dye used (e.g., indigo is more stable than some lighter plant dyes)
 • The dyeing process and fixation methods (use of natural mordants)
 • Care practices such as mild detergents and avoiding harsh sunlight drying

At Baanika:
 • We use carefully selected natural dyes and standardized dyeing processes to improve color stability
 • Our fabrics are designed to age gracefully, developing a soft, lived-in look over time

For infant wear, garments are typically outgrown quickly—often before any noticeable fading occurs—making natural dyes a practical and gentle choice.
With proper care, natural-dyed garments retain their beauty while reflecting the authenticity of natural materials.

Will natural colours bleed?

“Any initial colour release is minimal, temporary, and a natural characteristic of plant-based dyes.”
Natural-dyed fabrics may release a small amount of excess colour during the initial washes, especially if the dye is plant-based and gently processed. This is normal and does not indicate poor quality.
At Baanika:
 • Our fabrics go through careful dyeing and multiple wash processes to remove excess dye
 • We follow controlled dye fixation methods to improve colour stability After the first few washes, colour bleeding is minimal when garments are cared for properly.
To maintain best results, we recommend:
 • Washing separately for the first few washes
 • Using mild, baby-safe detergents
 • Avoiding harsh chemicals and bleach

If natural dyes are so beneficial, why aren’t they widely used in infant clothing?

Natural dyes offer many advantages, but they are more complex and time-intensive to work with compared to synthetic dyes.

Unlike mass-produced synthetic colouring, natural dyeing:
 • Requires careful sourcing of plant-based ingredients
 • Involves longer, skill-based dyeing processes
 • Can result in natural variations in shade, rather than perfectly uniform colours
These factors make natural dyes harder to scale and less commonly used in large-scale manufacturing.

 In contrast, synthetic dyes are:
 • Faster to apply
 • More consistent in colour
 • More cost-effective for mass production

How are natural dyes environmentally friendly?

Natural dyes are considered more environmentally friendly because they are derived from renewable, plant-based sources such as leaves, roots, flowers, and bark. Compared to many synthetic dyes, they:

• Are biodegradable, breaking down naturally without leaving harmful residues
• Involve fewer toxic chemicals, reducing the risk of water and soil pollution
• Can be processed using lower-impact methods, especially in small-batch dyeing

In contrast, conventional synthetic dyeing often requires:
• Petrochemical-based ingredients
• Large volumes of water and chemical additives
• Effluent treatment to manage pollution

That said, sustainability also depends on how dyes are sourced and processed.

Why don’t your garments have inner tags or labels?

We intentionally avoid placing tags or labels on the inner back of our garments, as they can sometimes feel itchy or irritating on a baby’s delicate skin.
Instead, we use a removable external label that provides all the necessary information without coming in direct contact with your baby.
This means:
• No irritation or discomfort from tags
• A clean, smooth inner surface for maximum comfort
• The option to remove the label easily before use

At Baanika, every detail is thoughtfully designed to ensure your baby feels nothing but softness against their skin.

Why is it important to introduce classic stories to babies early on?

Early experiences play an important role in a baby’s development, as the brain forms connections rapidly during the first few years of life.

While infants may not understand stories in a structured way, early exposure to:
 • Visual patterns and illustrations
 • Familiar characters and themes
 • Repetition and storytelling environments can support:
 • Sensory and visual development
 • Early language familiarity through sounds and rhythms
 • Emotional bonding, especially when stories are shared with caregivers

Classic stories, in particular, often carry simple, meaningful themes and gentle imagery, making them a comforting and enriching part of a child’s early environment.

At this stage, it’s not about learning the story—but about creating a warm, familiar world that your baby begins to associate with comfort, connection, and curiosity.

At Baanika, our designs are inspired by timeless stories to bring a sense of soft familiarity and gentle storytelling into your baby’s everyday wear
