Natural Dyeing: A Heritage, A Healing, A Way of Life
By Baanika — Colors From Nature, Crafted With Care
Natural dyeing is more than a technique — it is a way of living in harmony with the world around us. In ancient Ayurvedic and Vedic traditions, colors were chosen not just for beauty but for their healing and therapeutic properties. These special textiles were called Ayurvastra, meaning “clothes that heal.”
Ancient Wisdom, Living Color
“यस्ते रसः सोम याम्यः सोम तेन प्रधावय।”
Yaste rasaḥ soma yāmyaḥ soma tena pradhāvaya
“Let the essence of Soma, the sacred plant, cleanse and energize you.”
In classical Sanskrit, the word Rāga (राग) means both color and emotion — a reminder that color touches not just the eyes, but the heart.
“रागाः पुष्पफलसंभवाः”
Rāgāḥ puṣpa-phala-saṁbhavāḥ
“Colors derived from flowers and fruits.”
Every natural dye carries a story — a memory of leaves, roots, petals, bark, and minerals.
A story that has been passed from hands to fabric for centuries.
