In the race toward industrialized textile production and fast fashion, we lost something invaluable—our ancient wisdom, craftsmanship, and sustainable practices. The mass production of synthetic clothing led to quick consumption, quicker rejection, and long-term consequences for our environment and health.

Yet long before this shift, ancient civilizations had perfected the art of natural dyeing. Using plant roots, flowers, fruits, bark, and even minerals and insects, these dyes were safe for the skin, eco-friendly, and culturally rich.

But in 1856, with the accidental invention of the first synthetic dye—mauveine—everything changed. Synthetic dyes became cheaper, brighter, and faster. India’s world-renowned indigo dye industry declined, and traditional dye artisans were displaced, forced to abandon their skills in search of more viable livelihoods.

Today, after decades of synthetic-dominated fashion, we are witnessing the return of the slow fashion movement—because the signs are undeniable:
